Ecoregions

The EPA, in collaboration with other agencies, developed a framework to identify and map areas where ecosystems, including their types, quality, and quantities of environmental resources, are generally similar. These regions play a key role in organizing and applying ecosystem management strategies.

In the continental U.S., there are three levels of ecoregions, and one additional level specific to the contiguous U.S.,

  • Level I – Broad ecological regions across North America

  • Level II – More detailed descriptions of the larger ecological regions in North America

  • Level III – Smaller ecological areas within the Level II regions of North America

  • Level IV – More specific ecoregions within the contiguous U.S.

The EPA's Ecoregions of North America provides detailed information about ecological regions (ecoregions) across the continent.
